Overweight and obesity continues to be a major public health problem in Australia not only in adults but in our children. Check out these tips parents and carers can follow to help kids be healthy and set them up to manage their weight long term.
1. Be a role model - young ones copy behaviors of adults. Set good example when it comes to eating healthy and living a healthy lifestyle.
2. Be a teacher - encourage kids to be involved in the cooking and shopping process. Go through what foods are everyday foods, sometimes foods and occasional foods.
3. Don't start children on diets - early dieting behaviors can set your child up for uncontrollable weight issues for life. Constant yo yo dieting is not a healthy habit. Develop positive eating behaviors that can be maintained for life.
4. Allow your children to eat to their hunger - don't force children to eat when they don't want to. There is no need to prepare different foods for your children either. If they are hungry they will eat what ever is put in front of them. Giving in to your children's food desires will only make your life more difficult.
5. Be active - encourage your children to move. Get the dog out to the park, kick the footy around or play on the equipment. Try to limit t.v viewing to under 2hrs a day.
